What is a Pediatric Cardiologist?
At Sutter North our Pediatric Cardiologists are specially trained in the area of diagnosing infants and children with heart disease.
Where do I receive a referral?
A referral for a pediatric cardiology consultation usually comes from your primary care provider, if he or she feels there is indication for a specialist to consult. Once you have been referred to Pediatric Cardiology, the Cardiologist may have one or more tests that he may use at his discretion to help him evaluate the condition of your child’s heart. Some of these tests may be performed during the first appointment.
What to expect during your first visit?
When you arrive for your first appointment, the attending nurse will document your child’s height, weight, heart rate and blood pressure an electrocardiogram or “EKG” may be performed. The EKG is a test that looks at the electrical system of the heart. This test is relatively simple to perform, taking about 15 minutes.
An Echocardiogram or “ECHO” is another test that the cardiologist may want to have performed during your first visit; this test allows the physician to actually see the heart at work. We are able to visualize the working chambers and valves of the heart, utilizing ultrasound. The echocardiogram takes about 60 minutes. The ECHO and EKG allow the cardiologist to better determine if there is an electrical problem or structural problem with the heart.
A complete history will be taken by the cardiologist, followed by a physical examination. The cardiologist will then go over the results of the physical examination and tests with you, explaining his findings and answering any questions that you may have.
At this time the cardiologist will discuss with you his plan for care if it is needed, this could include further testing by other means. In the event your child needs to be followed closely or have a cardiac intervention it is good to know that one of our pediatric cardiologists specializes in intervention and that one of our pediatric cardiologists are always available for emergencies 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
